Over 21,000 meals were served by the
Greenwood Soup Kitchen Ministry in 2005!
Donations of food came from many sources: local churches, school groups, civic groups, clubs, service organizations, pre-school children, local food establishments and individuals. Monetary funding also came from expected sources and many unexpected sources. One young man regularly stops by in his bright red sports car with a $100 bill in hand. He firmly requests the donations be "anonymous." One regular guest of the Soup Kitchen was honored and remembered at the time of her death with memorials to the Soup Kitchen. God has blessed the ministry and enabled us to touch the lives of those in need for the physical body and food for the soul.

Staffing of the kitchen is ecumenical. On a day to day basis, the meal is prepared by volunteers from many churches. First Presbyterian is responsible for Friday's meal. Coordinator for the day is Phyllis Zuehlke who is ably assisted by chief soup chef, Bob Elliott and forty (40) volunteers who are assigned duty on a given day once every three months. Other days are coordinated in a variety of ways. Some days have the same 6-8 volunteers each week.

The Soup Kitchen Ministry is administered by a Board of Directors and maintains a 401c3 status. Quarterly meetings of the Board allow an overview of finances, approval of large purchases or equipment, and special events such as the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to be efficiently planned. General Coordinators Evan and Doris Clay plan purchasing and storage as well as making many public relations presentations to church and civic groups.

First Presbyterian Church heartily endorses the Soup Kitchen Ministry by providing the facility, all utilities and janitorial services.

No funding is received from government sources or the United Way.
