During the cold days of January, we need something to "warm us up."
The Christian Education Committee hopes that these speakers and topics will do just that!
Come join old friends and new friends as we meet together each Sunday morning for a combined
adult Sunday School Class in Alexander Hall (except for January 6th which will meet in the
sanctuary). This year is very educational and will be taught by our own staff of excellent
ordained clergy. Join us for coffee at 9:45 and the class at 10:00. You might be surprised.
You just might learn something!
January 6, 2008 - Rev. Bob Glick, ordained PCUSA minister, professor of music
at Erskine, and our favorite organist, will lead us in an adventure in the sanctuary.
His topic is, "What's Zat Mean?? (or Sanctuary Symbolism)". We will meet in the sanctuary
for this session. Bob will answer such questions as Why are things placed where they are
in the sanctuary? What do the various signs and symbols mean? Why do we do things in the
order we do in worship? Are the Sacraments more than symbols? What's the difference between
a sign and a symbol?
January 13, 2008 - Rev. Dr. George Wilson, ordained PCUSA minister and our
Pastor of Visitation, will help us in a quest for knowledge. His topic is How the Bible
Came to Be. In his presentation we will review briefly some of the history of the
development of the Bible from its early writings to the English translations and printing.
We will spend time discovering how the Bible came to be in its present form with punctuation,
chapters and verses. Why were some books chosen for inclusion and others were ignored?
January 20, 2008 - Rev. Dr. Chuck Moates, ordained Baptist minister and our
Pastor of Congregational Ministries, will lead us on a tour of the Christian church calendar.
His topic is Christians Marking Time. During our session together we will review the
liturgical church year from Advent to Christ the King Sunday. We will look at colors,
significant activities during certain times, and learn how it all fits together in a twelve
month period. Questions to be asked and answered include: When does the church year begin
(hint: it isn't in January!)? When does it end? When was the birthday of the church?
What is the only day of the year that we use black paraments? What is "ordinary time?"
January 27, 2008 - Rev. Dave Mayo, ordained PCUSA minister and our senior
minister, will lead us in a new language! The title of his presentation will be It's
All Greek to Me! Did you know that the New Testament was originally written in Greek?
Did you also know that many of our modern words actually have Biblical roots?
During this session we will talk about Biblical Greek and its influence on our world.
Prepare to laugh during this class and who knows, this just might be fascinating!
