  Kaleidoscope 2010

The January interim has always had the goal of making the congregation THINK! This year is no different. The questions presented are those that have come from members over the years.
January 3 - Dr. Steve Lowe, Associate Dean and Professor of Christian Education at Erskine Theological Seminary, will lead us as we try to understand the Mystery of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was given to people after the death of Christ (Pentecost). Yet, the Holy Spirit is presumed to have existed as a part of God forever and is referred to fairly often in the Old Testament. What was the Holy Spirit believed to be, and do, before Pentecost? Do we have evidence that the Holy Spirit is alive and working in and among us in the present time? What do you think?
January 10 - Rev. Dr. Charles Elliott, ordained PCUSA minister, former General Presbyter of Trinity Presbytery, and currently Assistant Vice President for Development and Church Relations at Thornwell Home for Children will discuss Morality. Doesn't each culture set its own standards? Do we use religion to support what we as a culture/society have deemed to be moral? Is religion a creation of humankind used to dictate and/or reinforce certain behaviors or standards? Does the human sense of right and wrong exist independent of religious codes? Does morality create our need for religion? What do you think?
January 17 - Rev. Bob Glick, ordained PCUSA minister, professor of music at Erskine College, a composer, an author, and our esteemed organist will guide us as we ask, "Is God the Only Way?" What about Jews? Islamics? How do we know that we are right and they are wrong? Many people, ministers and lay people alike, believe that at the end of time, everyone will go to Heaven and be reunited with God. Would a loving God who created us, really condemn ordinary people to an eternity of punishment for wrongdoing? Isn't God all loving and all forgiving? What do you think?
January 24 - Rev. Dr. Craig Vondergeest, ordained United Methodist minister and religion professor at Presbyterian College, will lead us as we consider Who Wrote the Bible? If most of the Bible was written by Jews, wouldn't it be normal for them to say that they are the chosen ones? Wouldn't the Bible be written from their point of view? Will Jews really be the only ones given the opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as Savior after death because they are the Chosen People? What do you think?
January 31 - Covered Dish Fellowship Breakfast
Join us each Sunday at 10:00 in Alexander Hall. You might just learn something!!!
