OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES
MINISTERIAL FUND
This is a dedicated account used to help people in our community with a
wide variety of emergency needs. Our ministers use this fund for those who
come to our church seeking help with a bus ticket home, assistance with rent,
school supplies for their children, food, fuel, or similar needs not covered
by other sources. The
loose offering on Communion Sundays and other
special gifts support our Ministerial Fund. The needs vary greatly and our
ministers take care to work through agencies like
Greater Greenwood United
Ministries and the Salvation Army, GLEAMNS and the Red Cross. Only after other options are exhausted
is this fund used.
LOCAL BENEVOLENCES
First Presbyterian provides funding and volunteer support to a number
of organizations and agencies in the community. Those supported by the
annual budget for calendar year 2006 are listed below. They are not listed
in any order of priority, but simply as they appear on the budget printout.
First Presbyterian was involved in the organization of this agency several
years ago. Church members continue to be active in its operation. The
Ministry is a partnership of denominations and congregations who pool
their funds so that persons in crisis have only one place to go to seek
assistance in a loving atmosphere. Consequently, clients can be counseled,
careful records can be kept, and appropriate measure taken to guide persons
to the proper agency or to give help at the Ministry. Church members serve
as volunteers and also on the Board. Budgeted: $7,500.00
COALITION FOR HUMAN NEEDS
This organization, better known as the Food Bank, opened its doors in 1983.
The Food Bank gives a week's basic groceries to families in emergency need.
Families are referred to the Food Bank by local helping agencies. All donations
go toward buying food. Budgeted: $500.00
FAITH HOME
A rehabilitation home for alcoholic and drug addicted men, this Christian
ministry has returned many to their families and communities as sober and
productive citizens. Budgeted: $2,000.00
In addition to its normal social work done on a continuing basis, the Salvation
Army assists with emergency needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and heating.
It provides Christmas dinner and toys to children of needy families, toiletry
kits for nursing home patients and prison inmates. Church members serve on the board. Budgeted: $2,000.00
