MISSIONARY SUPPORT
For many years First Presbyterian has supported missionaries around the world.
$10,000.00 is budgeted by the Outreach Committee for mission support.
In 2006, these funds will be distributed as follows:
Drs. Leslie and Cynthia Morgan
Drs. Leslie and Cynthia Morgan, Christian Mission Hospital, Rajshahi, Bangladesh.
Originally from Shreveport, La., both the Morgans are medical doctors. Les serves
as Medical Director of the Hospital and Cindy as a physician specializing in
pediatric services. "God has called us to care for these people and to nurture
them in their faith. Our particular task is to serve them in a ministry of compassion
and healing, and to help them be compassionate towards their neighbors so that
they themselves can become healers in their communities." In prior years our LOGOS children
collected several boxes of stuffed toys which were sent to the Morgansfor use in their ministry.
They have three children.Laura is in law school and Everett attends Centenary College in Shreveport; Stewart attend a
boarding High School in India. $2,200.00
Dr. Salvador and Irma de la Torre
Dr. Salvador and Irma de la Torre work in Kikuyu, Kenya, where Salvador is the
chief medical officer and Irma is a nurse at the Kikuyu Hospital. Established
in 1908 and operated by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa, Kikuyu Hospital
has three units, the General Hospital, an Eye Unit and an Orthopedic Rehabilitation
Unit. The de la Torres' were formerly at Mwandi, Zambia, where they were instrumental
in the construction of a new hospital. This congregation assisted in funding
a wing of that hospital, and two members traveled there in 1994 with Medical
Missions, Inc. to help with construction. The de la Torres' have three children.
$2,200.00
Barry Almy and Rev. Dr. Elizabeth McCormick
Barry Almay and Rev. Dr. Elizabeth McCormick serve as mission specialists in Khartoum, Sudan, where Barry is a mission
enabler for Sudan and Eithiopia and Betsy is a professor of theological studies at Nile Theological College.
She teaches biblical interpretation and pastoral ministry courses. Barry helps
Sudanese Presbyterian churches in their evangelism and education projects. $2,200.00
Rev. Ellen Dozier
Rev. Ellen Dozier works at Seminario Evangelico Presbiteriano in San Felipe, Guatemala
where she works with women's groups and the directors of local presbyteries as they plan
activities and find ways for women to be involved in ministry in Guatemala. She also works
with a theological education project for women. She is originally from Western North Carolina,
where she was ordained by Asheville Presbytery. $2,200.00
THE SCOTA HEARING LAB
The SCOTA (Special Children of the Amazon) Hearing Lab will be located in Medical Mission, Inc.'s newly
completed Headquarters building on El Jardin Campus in Iquitos, Peru. SCOTA was organized in 2004 to serve
physically and mentally handicapped children and has grown to more than 45 students in Iquitos
and almost that many at a new second site in Nauta, Peru. The new Hearing Lab will be an enormous asset the SCOTA program
since none of the students have been tested for hearing loss. In fact, in the entire city of Iquitos (500,000 people)
there is only one center with equipment for testing hearing. This new center will allow
hearing impaired children to function in their own society and empower them to make full use of their talents
and abilities. Medical Missions, Inc. is a ministry of Trinity Presbytery.
MMI has helped build 4 "jungle" churches, a clinic, 2 pastor's houses and 5 freshwater wells. In 1998 four members of our
congregation traveled to Iquitos to help build the first phase of this project. $1,200.00
