SHAWLS OF COMFORT-A MINISTRY
|
 |
| |
The shawl ministry was begun at First Presbyterian Church Greenwood in January 2006.
Since that time 49 shawls have been completed and prayerfully given away.
WHY? The shawls seem to be perfect metaphors for what we have experienced as
Christians. They are symbolic of the comforting, parenting, unconditionally loving God that
we have come to know. They are also an answer to the challenge of finding a way to reach out
to the people in our lives with our own gifts and talents, go forward with what we are
continually learning, and pass on a blessing. In times of sorrow, little can be said or done
that adequately expresses one's concern and desire to help. No words can make it all better.
But with the giving of a shawl, few words are necessary. Placing a beautiful, warm wrap
around someone's shoulders in a hug of empathy and support is transcendent.
THE PROCESS:The process of making a shawl becomes a spiritual practice centered in
prayer, as prayer, for prayer. Throughout the work are sprinkled the meditations and good
intentions of the knitter for the recipient. When the shawl is passed onto the receiver,
it is a grace-filled moment for the giver as well; because a part of her goes with the shawl.
WHEN: The shawls are given in good times as well as difficult ones. Shawls have been
given to new mothers, guest speakers, and those relocating to faraway places. They have been
given in times of bereavement and periods of recovery. Women, children, and men are being
wrapped in loving care.
SHAWL RECIPIENTS: Our knitters ask that members of First Presbyterian Church Greenwood
keep them informed of those who would be potential recipients of a Comfort Shawl. We make every
effort to finish a shawl as rapidly as possible.
TO PARTICIPATE: We meet as a group on the first and third Thursday of each month at
3:00 p.m. in the church library. We also have participants who knit or crochet baby caps for
missions in Africa and for newborns at Self Regional Hospital.
INFORMATION: For further information, patterns, or instruction, contact Sharon Smoke at
943-0447. Requests for shawls may also be communicated to one of the ministers.
